Moses Mendelssohn

Moses Mendelssohn

Another interesting comparison with Spinoza. Spinoza would probably have put Mendelssohn in the same space as Maimonides. It's a waste of time trying to reconcile rationality with Faith. Maimonides couldn't do it and Mendelssohn couldn't do it. That's my view of Spinoza's take.

Moses Mendelssohn

Moses Mendelssohn

Another good summary

Mendelssohn

I am beginning to agree with the point of view that Mendelssohn was an important intellectual forerunner of reform Judaism. Although he personally believed in the divine revelation of the Jewish Rituals and Ceremonies, he believed that following them was a matter of personal conscience. He personally believed, but his philosophy enabled others to make the kinds of changes to be mad by Reform Judaism. His primary point was that observance was a matted of personal conscience rather than community obligation. He personally believed but it was OK if others believed less.
